I have inherited from friends an old Disston 10-tpi saw, which I’ve spent a bit of time renovating from a pretty sad state.
Before:
And after:
After sharpening and re-setting it cuts very well, but I’ve discovered a kink in the plate, mainly on the toothed edge, that wasn’t apparent before I got rid of all the rust. I’ve ameliorated it somewhat by hammering, but I just can’t seem to smooth out the last of it.
Are there any cunning tips or trade secrets when it comes to this sort of job?
I second the motion. If it’s cutting well, just use it. Perhaps in a few more sharpenings you will get past the kink.
I’ve been trying to learn the craft of hammering plates ( i get old saws at a scrap yard almost free) and I’m slowly getting the hang of it, but it’s still a bit of a black art. Your first try or three you are as likely to ruin the plate.
Don’t try and learn on a saw you want to keep.
