I made my holder out of a piece of plywood, then sealed it with shellac before mounting the stones with clear silicone caulk. It has held up really well this past year.
Paul did a blog on this showing how he made his.

30 March 2014 at 9:59 am #40728I also have not fixed my diamond stones into the holder I find it handy to be ably to remove them from time to time for cleaning I also clamp them in my vice at times for preparing the edge of cabinet scrapers, by resting the face of the scraper on the top of the vice jaw it is easy to get a square edge on the scraper with a fine finish by working through the diamond stones rough to super fine.
The stones are a tight enough fit in the holder not to fall out when handling30 March 2014 at 10:21 pm #42235I finally made holder for my plates. Knife walls chisel and no. 71 router used.
I have used silicone to bed them in place the plates were quite tight any way.
It is one heavy board.
I have other plates if I have got to use in another way.Attachments:

I made the base out of 1/2 inch Baltic birch, laid strips of pine down to create 3 x 8 sections for the stones, and left enough room for a leather strop and possibly another stone. I lacquered the entire thing to protect it. And as you found out, not gluing them in allows you to clean up the stones easily.

I used a piece of 3/4″ Baltic Plywood, made my recess about a 1/8″ deep then used a little J – B Weld to hold them in place after I took the rubber feet off. I am going to give the wood block a coat of poly to help protect it this weekend.
