I recently bought a 2nd hand no. 4 on ebay, and got the base/sides and blade all flat and tuned up nicely.
One thing I’ve not figured out is how to tighten up the whole blade and depth adjuster a bit.
The blade and cap are are clamped down tightly enough, but the blade depth seems to slip very easily (e.g. if I put the plane down hard, shake it a bit, or just use for a while, then the blade depth changes from where I set it).
The depth adjuster knob also feels very loose, it moves very easily when I open/close it, whereas on my other planes, it takes a bit more effort to open/close.
Also (not sure if it’s related or not), the shavings I get from it at the moment are extremely crinkly, rather than being smooth, I wondered if this was due to it chattering from being loosely set, or whether there’s also something else I should address to fix this? (the blade itself is sharp enough, when I swap it into another no. 4 it produces great shavings)
Anything obvious I should do to remedy this?
The depth adjuster is two parts. The brass knob threads onto a screw which in turn threads into the plane body or frog. The screw can back out as you continually adjust the brass knob. I think it is a left-hand screw. Check to see if you can take off the adjuster knob and then tighten the screw into the plane.
Maybe a goose chase but is it possible that the chipbraker iron (which engages the yoke) is too flat?
I’ve had similar problems in the past and found the tip somewhere to bend the chipbraker slightly so the business end and the opposite end are only touching when the blade and chipbreaker aren’t screwed together.
Basically like an arched chipbreaker. Not much, about a 1/32″ or 1/16″ is enough !
Never had problems since…Diego
