I am making several free standing mirrors for the family and was looking for some advice on how to make the rabbet on the inside of the frame it will be 1/2 in by 1/2 in. Since I will be making several the method chosen will need to be fairly efficient. I had even thought about just using my Stanley combination plane and making the rabbet and then filling in the portion at the end with a block and planning flush. I am sure this would work, but am not sure about how it would look. I am looking for help from someone who has done this before.
thanks, BruceBob Rozaieski does a hand-tool only podcast, and he did a segment on exactly this topic, although it was with the caveat that the rabbets be hidden, IIRC. Anyways, you can listen to the episode, he did mention a couple of the most common ways to do a mirror, perhaps it will help you out. Jere’s the link to the episode in question — I should also mention your question was not the primary topic of the episode.
In the third video of the picture frame series Paul explains you can also glue 2 pieces of wood on top of each other. If one piece is 1/2″ thicker and 1/2″ narrower than the other you create a rebate that way.
Then there’s the Carved Mirror Frame project, which uses staggered mortise and tenon joints to hide the rebate. Maybe not the most suitable option if you have to make several.
