I have am making a marking gauge and I want to inline a brass bar into the beam. I spent quite a bit of time trying, and all I have to show for it is a half dozen pieces of scrap.
I originally tried laying it out like I would recess a hinge. But since this bar is 1/4″X6″ it proved quite difficult for me to keep the edges crisp across the length.
Then I tried using a plow plane. That might have worked, but mine has a skewed blade which means I can’t go from end-to-end.
I tried those two methods at least 3 times each, but the edges of the recess just looked terribly bad. Does anyone have any ideas?
Paul has some trick and techniques for using the plow plane, which he demonstrates on several projects ( the wall hung cabinet is one of them). It sounds like you are not cutting to a knife wall. Try marking the edges of your dado with your knife and then as you go deeper, reestablish the knife wall when you start seeing frayed wood. -Bryan
Use a wider board and cut it down after plowing, and use a knife wall.

I am using a mortise gauge. I think the problem was some awkward grain in my stock. I switched to walnut, and the plow plane worked like a champ, until the blade chipped
