Hey everyone! It has been a long while since I have posted here, but that is because I have been busy making things!
I won’t share everything I have made, but suffice to it say I’m one project short of being a genuine furniture maker at this point! 😛 I have made 2 dining tables, a 2 coffee tables, 2 end tables, and a long credenza. A bed is up next.
I’ll just share the one I finished last weekend – an 8′ long and 40″ wide dining table made from white oak. I don’t know what style you would call it, but I have been thinking it has a Scandinavian/modern look. I worked on this for just under 40 hours. I used a power planer to thickness the stock; the rest was done with good old muscle power.
The finish is a blend I experimented and came up with. My wife wanted something that looked like raw oak, but we wanted good protection on it (and I didn’t want to use poly). I found that by mixing a small amount of white stain in with waterlox that I as able to get pretty close to raw wood. My wife loves it, and I like that the finish will easily be repairable.
Here is the finished product, and a small image on how it goes together.

I wish I could get white oak here (in Bulgaria).
Very nice work.
Can you say more about the finish, please? Why didn’t Waterlox alone give a natural finish? Was the Waterlox alone too much amber and the white counters this?
I really like Waterlox, but have trouble applying it to vertical surfaces because it likes to run so easily. Did you just rub a zillion thin coats onto the legs? One consequence of this, by the way, is that I’ve never been willing to try the Waterlox satin.
Beautiful table! Did you make the chairs?
6 November 2017 at 4:24 pm #357421yes, the waterlox is a tung oil based finish and after building up a few coats it was too amber. If you apply it with a rag rather than a brush I don’t think you will have better results. It only needed 4 coats with a rag to build up a nice layer.
Thank you for the complement! I did not build the chairs. Maybe next summer 🙂
