Greetings, all!
I am looking for recommendations for axes. I have multiple interests/hobbies. Only sometimes do these overlap. Hammock camping, hiking, and woodworking overlap in more than a few areas. As I prepare for primitive winter camping for the first time here in Pittsburgh, I am considering the need for an ax or hatchet. While I do not consider myself concerned with ultralight anything, there is a limit to what I can carry in and out of the woods. Can EBT of you give some recommendations on where to look for a suitable dual-purpose ax?
26 October 2018 at 9:16 pm #552844Not sure what is your highest priority for using this. I’ve used an Estwing hatchet with the stacked leather handle for many years for about every task imaginable. It holds on edge well, but I’ve never tried to get it plane blade sharp. The handle is forged with the head and will never come loose. If you are going to depend on this out in the wild, you may want to consider one.
Eastwing does make a good one. A good small axe or hatchet is going to be pretty decent for both. the trick si finding one that has a proper profile and width. Most hatchets on the market are more like wedges with a handle than a proper hatchet.
The “Estwing 16 in. Camper’s Nylon-Vinyl Shock Reduction Grip Handle Axe” is probably the closets of the shelf axe I have seen to a decent joiner axe. I ended up going to a knife maker I know and had him just regrind a cheap small axe to a proper profile and thickness.
27 October 2018 at 4:37 am #552852If you are looking for an axe to do double duty then look for the Husqvarna Carpenters Axe. I believe it is made by Hultafors who make and axe almost identical but the Husky axe is considerably cheaper.
The design is perfect for hewing wood for carpentry and would also make an excellent general purpose camping axe.27 October 2018 at 10:17 pm #552856Gränsfors offers an axe that might be what you are looking for. There are probably less expensive alternatives, Hultafors among them. That brand however doesn’t compare at all.

@sojansson Thanks for that link. The entire line of Grandsfors have a right proper profile.
