Yep! I will have a 1/2″ wide strip left over after making my rabbet plane blade today. I think I will make a dovetail chisel for cleaning out the corners of half blind dovetail sockets. If I order some more steel I think I will make a couple of plane makers floats for future plane builds.
Floats are great! I learned from Tod, too. Have you decided if you will harden yours or not? I did not harden mine and am happy with that choice so that I can touch them up easily with a file. The hardest part for me was making a handle because I’d never burned a tang into a handle before and wasn’t sure how to go about it.
There is a preview of “Making wood tools” at shakerovalbox.com . The full book appears to have a range of planes, scrapers and bow saw tutorials. Maybe this gives some of you more ideas for making tools.
