Mallet from a log

Here’s some pics of a mallet I made from an ash log.
I roughed out the head and handle by sawing and splitting the wood with an axe.
I used a scrub and smoothing plane to shape. Then chopped out the mortise.
Some boiled linseed oil and a small bit of wax to finish.
That’s awesome, Jude. And just a short while earlier that mallet was a lifeless piece of wood. You gave it life – I hope it serves you well for many years.
I cheated when I made a mallet by laminating the head, so I didn’t have to chop the mortise. That long of a mortise seems daunting. The walls need to be very straight so the handle doesn’t move.
