Here is what I have been up to lately, beside looking for a new job.
Made a mallet for chisel work. Head is from a hunk of maple I had. For the handle I used a cutoff from a laminated beam.
Built a shooting board from some wood I got at an estate sale.
Installed a inexpensive woodworking vise as a tail vise. Works greate for ripping boards vertically.

9 March 2014 at 10:32 pm #28762Good work on these projects. I admire the resourcefulness shown.
As soon as I have my finished bench, I plan on making similar projects
soon afterward.10 March 2014 at 4:09 am #28781Like the shape of the mallet! Shooting board looks to be walnut I’m guessing, also very nice looking.
I use a small secondary vise mounted like a tail vise on my bench, too. Very useful for ripping, as you demonstrate.10 March 2014 at 4:56 am #28793Nice mallet Robin and a walnut shooting board . Almost to good to use;)
I have 2 vices on my bench both on the front but at each end of bench. The right hand vice my main vice is on the right of bench and is not against any obstructions. So I am able to rip boards on the right hand vice.
I would love an end vice like you have but my space and bench will allow that configuration.
Well done and enjoy your bench vice.Nice work Robin. I love the shaping on the mallet, including the bulb on the end of the handle. That should keep the mallet from sailing through the air when you need maximum persuasion. 😉
Are those saws wedged between boxes in the background? That is better than my arrangement. You and I both should build saw tills as our next project. 😉
