Welcome! / Forums / Project Series / Breadboard-end Cutting Board / Maple / cherry board in progress
I am doing a single width maple board as a small cheese board, approx 7-1/2″ x 11-1/2″, 1-1/2 ” ends of cherry. The maple is very dense, and I think the dust clogs and binds the blade, both at the shoulder stop cut and the face cut. I will post some pics when I can. I’ve only done one tenon so far and finding the maple very tough when I chisel or use the router plane to thickness the tenon. I’ll make sure I sharpen everything again before I give it another go. Just thought I’d share this one is tougher than I thought, in maple anyway.
Anxious to see it too Brian!
I’m currently attempting to make a few (3) in birds eye maple (for Christmas) and having the same issue, MAN this stuff is tough! Any other time i’ve chiseled mortises i’ve gotten chunks, this time i’m only getting tiny chips, LOL! Never mind sawing tenons, what a workout hahaha!
Here is a pic of cut tenon (yes it’s a workout Barry, good thing these are fairly small). It’s a bit rough on the tenon, but looks worse in pic and will be buried anyway. the cherry ends are not done, no plough plane so I tried to cut with saw and chisel and made a mess, so will have to cut another. One had some squirrelly grain on it so I was hoping to use it. Ah well …. All things for a reason.
Couple pics of board complete. I’d say I give myself 4/5, first attempt. Learned a few things that will help for next time. I was real happy with the way the ends came into line. I do not have a plough, and thankfully my son who was helping oversee remembered I had a narrow enough chisel to get into to clean out the groove. Sorry if they come out upside down again.(sigh)
