I just stumbled on this post and thought I would post some photos my french inspired combination gauge. I made it from scraps lying about and used finish nails for the pins (to be replaced with suitable harder steel later). It is very much like Greg’s design although my design was based partially on a very old Stanley combination gauge that I have.
The gauge works as well as others I have used and even better than some…
I like the french style for one handed operation although the top mounted pins make pin visibility less optimal than corner mounted as Paul has pointed out. Corner mounted pins would be difficult for the inner mortise pin with this design I think
I have used it for my work bench build and other projects and it has been very useful. It seems very much in the style of WWMC to make things to help you make other things – a real hoot for sure 😉
Note: I used spruce to make the wedge as it will have more give than the maple bar and much easier to replace
