Sorry if this was already discussed… I was wondering if anyone was using the 3M Micro Abrasive Film products and what they thought of them? It sounds like a pretty good way to get crazy sharp tools, but wondering if it would be better than a DMT Diamond stone. Is it worth it?
Try taking a look at this link from Pauls blog, it may be helpful in answering your questions http://paulsellers.com/2013/10/debunking-myths-mysteries-scary-sharp-methods/
19 February 2014 at 7:46 pm #28077Hi Walt
I started off sharpening using the 3m film stuck to plate glass and a veritas honing guide, it works well, I used to start off with quite course wet and dry to remove the bulk of the material. I used to produce a bevel and a micro bevel
I have now changed to using the DMT diamond stones , I can get a cutting edge just as good now as I used to get with the film but so much faster I now only produce the one convex bevel.(Paul’s method)
It really does only take a matter of 2 minutes to sharpen a chisel or a plane iron. It used to take longer than that to get out my honing guide and set it up. With the film is is better to only pull the blade over the file as it will easily tearok, I read the Paul’s blog and comments. I was taken in by the “scary sharp” words. I had invisioned that scene from The Bodyguard where a woman’s scarf fell on a sword and just the weight of the scarf caused it to cut in two when it hit the edge. That to me was “scary sharp” and I think it would be fun to have something that sharp. Maybe that was just Hollywood – idk. Anyway, I did buy the dmt duo and it has been working great for my purposes. Well, that and a strop with jewler’s rouge for final polishing.
I have used lapping films to sharpen straight razors in the past. My impression is that they are easy to use and relatively fast, but did not yield the best results I’ve every seen. I think they would be a usable option for someone new to sharpening, but IMO not the best overall option.
20 February 2014 at 7:32 am #28111I have used the film and it does a very nice job, however the film wears out very quickly. I have found some good deals on E-bay but I still think it a bit costly. Try it out you can’t go wrong by buying a few sheets.
