A friend asked if I could make her a mirror for her bathroom. This is my first “commission” so I was really excited. I ordered some Oak (which turned out to be quarter sawn) and Sapele. Must admit I was a bit shocked when the bill came, but oh boy do those 2 woods complement each other.
The design is simple enough: panel frame as used in the toolbox series. I had to improvise a bit since my Record 044 came with imperial sized cutters (I used the 1/8 ” one) but my bench chisels come in metric sizes. In short: the grooves are 1/8″ and the tenons are 6mm. Luckily it all worked out.
All in all I am very pleased with the result. A few small gaps that disappeared after glueing. It was also my first time using Sapele. What a lovely wood to work with!

Yes there is quite a difference between metric and imperial, I do admit working in metric is alot simpler I don’t understand why the yanks don’t seem to understand it but it is yankees world so you might as well switch to imperial if you can. I’m so used to it now that’s all I use in all my projects.
Thanks guys!
Indeed I also used mortises. Not sure if it was necessary but at least I got the exercise. Putting it all together was immensely satisfying.I should look into finding cutters for the Record 044 in metric sizes. Could also help with making grooves for plywood. The plywood that is easily available here is either too thick for the 1/8″ cutter or too thin in for the 1/4, 3/8, 13/67 or whatever weird sizes they are. 🙂
