I have not tried that, but it seems to me the chuck in a brace might not hold a round shank firmly enough. There are different types of chucks on different braces. Some might hold the round shank better than others. Mine is a two-jaw chuck and I think it is meant to hold square tapered shank bits. I don’t think it would hold round shank bits very well.
If you wanted to buy a 1″ bit for your brace, they are easy enough to find on e-Bay or Etsy or flea markets.
I have several 2 and 3 jaw chuck braces, after being incredibly disappointed with Irwin auger bits I switched to Wood Owl bits and have been extremely happy with the result. They are hex shanked, they cut a very clean hole. I recently used mine on a mock timber frame project to drill 3/8 draw bole holes 5 inches deep.
