Yuck … at least at my local big box stores. I bought a 2×4″ sheet of “birch plywood”, which really just appears to have a paper-thin sheet of veneer on both sides over a non-descript type of wood. Sneezing on this stuff would bust a hole through the veneer. I think I can’t sand at all. Luckily it’s already fairly smooth, so I’m just going to stain and wax and call it done.
I live in the states. Is there a good source for properly thick veneer that can be applied to a standard ply sheet?
