I took many of the elements from Paul’s coffee table video and created this TV stand out of it. The wood is all pine. The table top, shelf, and lower aprons are construction grade 2×4’s. The legs are 4×4’s milled down (by hand) to 3×3. The top aprons were a 1×6 select grade pine.
I used the haunched tenons for the top aprons and did a draw bore for each top apron. The tenons were 1/4″ wide and 1.5″ deep. I had no idea how challenging that would be until I started. Pretty deep. The arch in the top apron was using Paul’s relief cut method, chisel, and spoke shave – that was fun.
The lower aprons tenons were 1/2″ W x 3/4″ D. The 2×4’s were cut down to 1×3 for the lower apron. The shelf and top I actually used a table saw to rough cut the 2×4’s to dimension and then planed them true and square. I was happy with the glue up – no gaps, very tight.
As you can see from the picture of the table top – it is full of knots. I actually selected these boards for the look I wanted. It turned out to be a real challenge to plane. I used my #4, #5, #8, card scrapers, sanding blocks, bought a cabinet scraper – what a chore. That was probably the most difficult part of this build.
I finished it with 2 coats of Minwax Provincial stain, 3 coats of tung oil, buffed with 0000 steel wool, then 3 coats of shellac, and finally, 2 coats of poly. I did steel wool and sanding between the shellac and poly – and then after the poly.
These were the tightest shoulders I’ve ever put together. The reward, for me, was seeing it all come together and it just fit right.
