I have Woden 778 rebate plane (like Record), which works just fine, except across grain for having a straight iron. So I’ve started to looking for a skew angle rebate plane, and old wooden ones seem very reasonably priced.
I’m sure both moving & sash fillisters have their pros & cons. Does anyone know or have experience on what sort of work are good, or not so good for? Can you e.g. detach the arms from a sash fillister if needed?
What I have in mind is cutting rabbets cross and with the grain, cleaning up wide tenons as in breadboards, and maybe raised panels though I haven’t tried that with a bench plane as Paul does.
Then there’s the plain rebate plane, but I think a nicker and depth stop could be nice to have – or are they just luxury I can do without? Then again, if I were better with a chisel then most planes would be unneccessary I suppose.
I have a Mosley and Sons moving fillister with a skew mouth, its fantastic one of my favourite planes. If memory serves it cost me less then a tenner from eBay, I did have to re-box part of it but I enjoyed doing it.
