21 May 2013 at 10:44 pm #12292Got my 405 today needed a bit of a clean up and some of the cutters were a little rusty one was quite badly pitted but nothing a bit of grinding will not sort out. I got rid of the rust on cutters now need to flatten backs properly grind and hone.
I did have a little go using 405 with a cutter from my 050c set fitted pretty well slot in cutter slightly bigger so it worked. The 405 cutters will not fit 050c.
I really liked the knob on the fence made it easy to push against edge of wood and allow even pressure gives you good control of tool. The biggest problem I had getting plane and bits back in box I think you need a degree to work that one out.
I may buy another 405 for spares.I have also been a bit more naughty bought a restored Record 5 1/2, Brand new Stanley 90 Bullnose plane, and a brand new Stanley spokeshave 151r. I do like the look of Veritas spokeshaves. I better hold fire for a little while otherwise her in doors have my guts for garters.
