Got my first bench built. What a difference from the plywood I had screwed together. That bench shook so much I used to drop tools off, including my plane, which now has a new tote after the old one broke in half.
It’s certainly not a pice of fine furniture, but it’s rock solid, and I learned so much by working with longer boards with lots of knots and crazy grain.

28 September 2016 at 2:00 am #140918Looking good KJ. You’re going to have a lot of fun with that. I had the same vise as that one. Took me a little while to get used to the QR mechanism, but it worked well.
30 September 2016 at 8:14 am #141059That looks good, and I bet you’re enjoying having a solid bench to work on.
I’m already using my half-finished bench in preference to the wobbly saw-horses I started out working on (see photo). The top has developed a twist though, so I’m holding off attaching it until I see if the twist gets worse or not.
I have also learned a lot by taking on a large project like this. Making smaller pieces will seem easy after dealing with the long boards used in the workbench. Invaluable experience for someone like me who hasn’t done this kind of thing before.

My top was also twisted. I really only took out the twist on about one foot of either end on the underside where it contacts the leg frames. I didn’t think the area in between was worth the effort. Or I got lazy ?. The top is a bit twisted but I left it to see if it mattered. I worked on the area near the vise to get that nice and flat and perpendicular to the apron. The rest I left and it doesn’t seem to make a big difference.
Your bench is looking good Steve. You’re going to love it.

17 October 2016 at 1:20 pm #141499Hi Kevin. That’s my plan too – just sort out the twist where it matters. I have had a few weeks doing other things, but now it’s time to finish my bench and start using it properly.
21 October 2016 at 11:34 pm #141753Steve, that looks quite stout. You can hide under it during an earthquake – or just use it for many years to come.
22 October 2016 at 5:52 am #141780The vise is the steel quick release vise from the Lee Valley Tools website. I got the biggest one, which I think is 10″. It did take a little bit of getting used to the quick release, a few turns of the handle, but I really like it.
