I know there are a few of us here that use a mortise chisel now and then, and have struggled with getting a good square edge with sharpening. I was excited to try the Mark II narrow blade adapter when it came out, but mortise chisels slip on that, too. You’d think such a large hunk of steel would be easier to sharpen free hand, but no.
Lee Valley obviously heard the noise and came out with a mortise chisel adapter for the Mark II:

Anybody that gets it, please post here with your experience. I’ll see if I can wrangle up a spare $30 to try it, too.
I was at my local Lee Valley store yesterday and took a look at the adapter. Basically it’s spacer that goes between the head and the roller so that thicker chisels can be sharpened.
I have the narrow blade head which works fine with my Narex mortise chisels so I haven’t tried the adapter to see if it makes a difference.
Thanks Peter! I’m not sure if that helps me any, then. My chisels have plenty of room, they just slip in the jaws.
I’ll just keep freehand sharpening.
I had the same problem. I used some sandpaper to roughen the inside of the jaws. It seems to work fine now.
