Looking for a recommendation on chisels.
I have a set of $25 Stanley from big box store sitting around somewhere but I’m pretty sure that’s going to be junk. Maybe for sharpening practice, I dunno.
Anyway I’m looking for a set I can get for $150 or less. I don’t want to spend $300-500 on a set or Sorby of something like that. Old secondhand is perfectly fine.
I would really prefer imperial markings and widths instead of metric with “almost kinda sorta” imperial conversions. I know there’s Narex but.. yeah.
I don’t care about intial quality; thanks to Paul, I will eventually be able to sharpen. I do care about edge retention of course.
Something like 1/8 1/4 3/8 1/2 5/8 3/4 1 in a set although I probably don’t really need 1/8 3/8 5/8 right away?
Any thoughts on brand I can get online anywhere, or what to look for on places like Ebay or such?
Thanks.
Ben,
I have a set of these and am very happy with them.

PS I already had a 1/8″ and substituted it out for the 5/8’with no problem.10 September 2014 at 10:26 pm #78407Narex 8116 cabinetmaker chisels are nice and have a fine bevel good for dovetails. You get a lot for your money They only come in metric this hardly matters as you usually set your gauges to the chisel width. I have chisels that say they are 1/4″ but they can be a little over or under that measurement.

IMHO very good value for the money.

12 September 2014 at 5:39 am #80174I have the Narex chisels premium, standard and mortising. And I have them in both metric and imperial. You can get a wide variety of their chisels from Highland Hardware in the metric sizes. And you can get imperial sizes from Lee Valley as stated earlier. They are a really great value.
