Hi,
I have recently acquired a no.80 cabinet scraper and have tried to sharpen and burnish the edge, with some success.However, when going through the final burnishing, the edge seems to fracture, leaving various peaks and troughs, which in turn leave an uneven surface in the scraped surface, with grooves and ridges.
Is this a case of too much pressure being applied when turning the edge, poor quality steel of the blade, or something else I might be missing?
I have followed Paul’s video process on sharpening the scraper blade, but don’t seem to be able to produce a good result.
I would add that I have only tried the one blade that came with the Faithfull cabinet scraper, so have not tried on another piece of steel.
Any help would be great.

James.Quite often I have found on cheaper edged tools this happens.
I have some cheaper chisels and plane irons I use for rough work and the edges would roll or crumble easily until I hone the edge back about 1/8″ or so. Once I do that the steel is good. I have an off brand wet grinder and was able to do this without too much heat. Paul has a video on using a dry grinder somewhere on youtube. If you go that route, use a white stone alum oxide grinder with a course grit, a fine grit may overheat the steel. The corners are most susceptible to over heating. You might also try to harden and retemper the blade. He also has a video on that too.
I think it is a result of poor heat treat and temper at the edge or the edge was overheated during the grinding process. Time is money and the faster the tools are processed and the fewer hands that touch them is one way to make them less expensive.

Many thanks.20 September 2018 at 8:14 pm #552044I get this at times and wonder if i do burnish it too much or use to much pressure when burnishing. We are after all turning a polished edge and it should not take a lot of either oil will help it also.

Thanks.21 September 2018 at 7:48 pm #552070You might want to try tempering it at 400F in your oven for half an hour or so. Just let it cool down on its own. It might help – probably not, but it’s easy enough to do.
