Just finished this cutting board in oak. A deceptively challenging project – I certainly learnt a bit about planing oak grain, and when to reach for the #80 cabinet scraper instead! Pretty happy with the end result, which has been finished with a light coat of coconut oil.
Nice job! Oak will tear out pretty good if you’re going against the grain, especially if you’re using a bevel up plane. Besides, the cabinet scraper is great fun on oak so why not?
Great job! Everything looks nice and tight.
You’re right about it being a deceptively challenging project. I’m fine tuning the joints on my second one now and found the wide tenons more difficult than I was expecting. I also quickly learned just how little the hole in the tenon needs to be. Everyone should make at least one of these cutting boards!
