I’m having trouble getting box frames square. I’m guessing that when I plane the ends of boards square, I’m taking too much off some of them and not others. I mark them with a knife and combination square and then plane to the knife wall, but 2 corners will always be 1/8 of an inch longer when I measure from corner to corner. I was also thinking that I could be clamping them out of square when I glue up.
It’s a good idea to stack your pieces that are supposed to be the same size and eyeball if they are the same before starting the joinery. That way you can get the pieces shaved down to the same exact size. A couple swipes with the plane and you’re off to the races.
My experience has been this: small problems become big problems later on. Every component that is just a little off adds up and at some point, and all these things will need to be “fixed”. Fixing them when you’re prepping your stock is much easier than after your piece is assembled. Square, parallel, and same thickness has really helped me.
Good luck
