I too recommend the old record vices. I bought one on eBay (found a very good deal, the seller said it sold too fast lol)
I haven’t put it on this bench yet, I will put it on the bench I will build in the future but it is absolutely rock solid. The quick release I can see myself using a lot, it doesnt rack at all in the slightest either horizontally or vertically. Very different from the 6″ Axminster vice I use currently on this bench. I can’t see a wooden leg or face vice being as good as this either.
I just picked up a 9″ eclipse vise for $92, free shipping.. Amazon had a coupon for all three sized models. The eclipse vise gets really good reviews, so I feel confident it will serve me well. Also, the eclipse vise will replace the leg vise I’m currently using.. The leg vise has become way to finicky for me…
The one thing I’ve noticed with buying from Amazon, is they use a dynamic pricing, so try and avoid impulse purchasing, because there is a good chance the price will drop. I noticed that when I was was watching the Rikkon 10″ bandsaw. I saw the price fluctuate as much as $70-80..
I am really found of the record vise’s. I have a 52 1/2 which I attached leather to the face, grips like no tomorrow. I also built Paul’s bench where I installed this vise, great set up.
