I have been planing a large number of oak panels. I set up the plane pretty well (i think) and made sure it was sharpe. When I started planing the rough sawn surface the plane worked well and I quickly achieved a smooth surface, but as I continued to plane to reduce thickness I found the plane just skipped over the surface and would not take a shaving.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Am I doing something fundamentally wrong?
ThanksMick

Could be that you’ve planed a slight hollow and a longer plane sole will just glide over the surface.
1 February 2016 at 5:13 pm #134394I was using a number 5, but I also had the same problem with a number 4. Also the wood became sort of glossy and very smooth? Thanks for the reply maybe it was a hollow but the problem was there for the entire length of the piece?
Mick
Another possibility is that the blade really isn’t sharp enough for the oak. One version of this is that the edge is strong enough to handle the rough furry surface, which isn’t as challenging, and then fails when it gets to firm wood. This could happen if your “sharp edge” really still has the burr on it. Take off the cap iron and feel the blade for a burr on both sides, but most likely on the flat side.
The glossy / shiny wood makes me think like +ehisey that the bevel is too steep.
i had the same problem in some old oak studs i think got extremely hard. what ehisey is saying makes good sense although i could cut other softer woods. a dull plane in oak just gives more resistance its hard to believe it would get so dull it couldn’t initialize a cut. its got to be the angle presented to the wood. let us know what you find out i have two laminated sections for a work bench leaning against the wall i have yet to wind up and true because of this problem
