    I love Richard Maguire’s approach. He makes refined benches, but also appreciates simple, inexpensive solutions, which is very refreshing.

    His notched batten would work for me, and prevent most needs for a tail vise. The only weakness is when he planes the board at the very front edge of the bench and the batten loosens up and shifts a bit. I bet if the dog holes were just a bit closer to the front edge of the bench (or the board was set-in more), that minor issue would disappear.

    I can tell you that the holdfast and batten works really and is dead simple. Also I would put it heads up against any end vise for speed and I feel that it does not flex the board as much as the end vice. Just my two cents.
