Hello everyone, I am having problems planing the faces of dovetail boxes. When the blade exits the wood I am getting a lot of chipping on the side not being planed. For now I’m having to clamp a scrap onto the box to stop it.
My irons seem sharp, sharp enough to cut paper. I’m wondering if it’s the sharpness of the iron our if it’s my technique? Any help would be much appreciated
Because you are planing off one face into the end-grain of the next face piece, causing tear out b/c the fibers are not supported (hence the sacrificial piece works). Generally you would plane back inwards toward the middle to avoid that problem (from both sides). Probably worth trying a skew-cut or circular cut with the plane to lower the incidence of blasting straight into the end grain.
Thank you for the reply David. When you plane in from both sides do run the plane off three side of the box or do you lift the plane up off of the work piece?
