My wife asked me to make a planter box so we can grow some fresh herbs.
It was an opportunity to practice my dovetails. I still need to practice my dovetails; some of them are a bit gappy.
The base of the planter is glued in to place and has a few screws as additional holding.
I built a bed for us recently. I now have to make drawers for fitting in the base of the bed. I’ve calculated it out and making those drawers will give me lots of practice at cutting dovetails…..there will be approximately 250 dovetails to be cut for all the drawers.
Cross-head screws and dovetails??? How dare you! (joking :D)
I agree, panter boxes have to keep a considerable weight, so stability is important. But I would have put the bottom into a groove or (even screwed) added a small support inside to hold it.
Or, you could have used wooden dowels, either to secure the bottom or very short ones to hide the screws.
But this is a nice project, very good job too!
I have similar problems with dovetails. It seems to be quite difficult to get the shoulders right. perhaps we are just too slow and the wood starts to warp out of boredom?

You’ll be accomplished at dovetails by the end of the drawer project. Good luck.
