Point behind this plane design?

So can some one explain this plane design to me? (other than being apperantly cheap to produce

It was among the many neglected tools in the woodshop that came with my house purchase a few years ago. Now, I have gotten it flattened, sharpened, and doing a fine job of both endgrain trimming and smoothing. I am, despite this, baffled by the use of a spokeshave style blade adjustment/frog. Makes for quite the PITA to dial in.
I saw this plane on Amazon, as a matter of fact! Strange bugger, isn’t it? I don’t know what Stanley was thinking.
I googled it, and it looks like it sells for 15 bucks, so I think cheap to make is the answer.
It would certainly be a pain to use.
