Hey gang,
Two questions:
1) do you find any significant differences between brands of coping saw blades?
2) how do you determine proper TPI?

Hi Richard.
I don’t have an answer for your first question, but for the second question you want to choose a TPI to correspond with how you will use your coping saw. I believe the regular TPI for cutting wood is 16 and for metal it can be considerably higher. Higher TPI means a smoother finish but a slower cut.
I have found a difference.
Some unbranded blades have been quick to dull, and start to show signs of going flimsy more quickly.
Blades sourced from Lee Valley are marginally better. Zona brand have held up the best so far.
I generally stay to the 15tpi , although I do keep a pack of 24 and 32tpi.
For spoon or spatula cutting, or roughing out handles I find the 15tpi works fine in walnut, cherry, oak, or softwood that I have used.
