Hi Paul,
I’ve just completed a wall tool cabinet and was considering a painted finish but wasn’t so keen on a gloss.
Now your large workshop cabinet seen in the background of your videos; the paintwork seems a matt finish, I was wondering what was used on that as it kinda appeals.
Many Thanks
Mark15 June 2015 at 9:18 pm #127794Mark, I’m not sure Paul has time to look at all these forum entries (unless maybe you add one of those “@name” things so he gets an e-mail about it.
But I would suggest you try a couple different paints on some scrap to see how you like it. I understand you may not want to buy paint that you would ultimately dislike, but maybe if you have on hand some gloss and some matte paint (even if it’s not the right color) you could get a feel for how your cabinet might look.
You can read this blog where Paul talks about painting projects:

I wanted a paint with the toughness of gloss but with a matt Finnish without going through the lime or chalk paint route and having to introduce a hardened protective coat over the top.
I’m in the Uk so it would need to be available here; will scout round and look through the links you’ve kindly posted for me and if I come across a solution Ill update you on what I went for if you like, Thanks again. Be back in a while away again soon for another course of treatment so will apologise in advance if I don’t post anything in the very near future.(Photo is of the cabinet so far an ongoing evolving project.)

“Another course of treatment” – that doesn’t sound good. Good luck with whatever it is and hope to see you back soon with more progress.
7 October 2015 at 7:26 pm #131102This is great Mark! I’m going to be building one in the coming weeks and hadn’t been able to find time to sit down and design it yet. Thanks for sharing your work and ideas!

If your looking for a milk paint look, I’ve had good success with General Finishes Milk Paint. It’s actually an acrylic paint that looks like milk paint, but with the toughness and ease of use of a modern paint. I’m not sure if it’s available in the UK though.
Here’s a link to their site:

I’ve checked and the product is indeed available here in the Uk and its with one of my regular suppliers. Many thanks.
