Thanks everyone. Had a look on ebay and it seems I have some bad luck finding any kind of tools that are in moderately good condition. You guys in the UK are lucky, it seems there are many tools on the UK ebay for good prices. I think the N.American ebay is full of tool collectors and prices approach and in many cases exceed that of new tools, especially hand planes. Saw a good Stanley 5 that sold for 200 dollars which is the same as a new veritas. Looks like I’ll be paying a visit to Lee Valley again! I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I go in there lol.
13 December 2012 at 7:52 pm #4724Dave, do not give up. Very nice planes are out there for reasonable prices. I just found my 044 on Ebay from New Mexico. I live in Louisiana and find planes here and there, refinish them if needed and sell what I don’t wish to keep. I’ve seen #5 Type 11 jack planes go for $50 on Woodnets Forum. eBay is a gamble but Woodnet has a nice hand tool forum and exchange thread for tools.

Anonymous13 December 2012 at 7:55 pm #4725Here’s a picture illustrating my Record #712 skew rebate planes in front of my #040, #043 & #044 plough planes. I’ll track down the boxes with my set of wooden skew rebate planes, but hope the existing picture helps illustrate a couple of similarities between the #712 (From circa 1935-1943) and Veritas skew rebate plane. 🙂

I think half of the trick to successful shopping on evil-bay involves being selective and choosing user tools over collector grade tools, while resisting the temptation to bid high. It’s difficult at first, but you soon come to recognise certain pointers/indicators that something shows promise as a potentially healthy addition to your tool kit. It’s one route to avoiding high prices. 😉
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 8:00 pm #4728Nice pics Brent, the plane looks in great condition good buy buddy.
Gary my friend is there a plane ever made that you don’t have. HaHa 😉
13 December 2012 at 8:14 pm #4733I use one of these;

Still trying to perfect it, but it’s working adequately in my hands so far.
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 8:19 pm #4735Nice plane Alex, I was just talking to Matthew the other day about it.
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 8:21 pm #4736Thank you Brent 🙂
Well Ken…… 😀 I’m still working at picking up a few more 😀 , but have most of the line up of hand planes produced by Record and own quite a number of wooden bench, moulding and rebate planes 😉 It’s just so frustrating being unable to get them un-boxed and put to use until my workshop is built, although a good few of them will see the light of day when I make my new kitchen cabinets and doors. 🙂
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 9:04 pm #4750They definitely produce nice planes and marking out tools Ken 🙂
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 9:20 pm #4753Yet another Record rebate plane, but this time a side rebate plane suitable for re-sizing & adjusting rebates, housing joints/dado’s and sliding dovetails. 🙂
Anonymous13 December 2012 at 9:27 pm #4757HaHa No stopping you now Gary. Keep them coming buddy I love seeing them all 😉
