Wow! She must be an incredible woman Brian! I would keep her around! I believe my wife is buying “me” a new Kindle, so “she” can read while I am out in the shop.
13 November 2013 at 8:22 am #21384I bought the au riot 4 in one rasp and it is a different tool altogether from the bahco rasp. I guess you get what you pay for but the expensive rasp is easily worth the extra money in use and finish so I guess it is worth spending the money if it is going to be used!
Mick13 November 2013 at 1:38 pm #21392I am sure the ones listed above will all work just fine.
My experience about rasps is not from buying the brands named in the posts above. I, like most here, go to flea markets, yard sales, and antique shops always looking for old tools. If I see a rasp or file slightly different from anything I have, I buy it. Most for a few dollars.
My point is that they all removed wood. Some rougher than others, but they all work. You are most likely always going to follow a rasps with a file, scraper, or sandpaper. Most are not finishing tools.
But I have been wrong before. Ha Ha.
PS. I would love to have the ones Mr. Sellers use, maybe one day.
17 November 2013 at 3:59 pm #21634Sorry I didn’t manage to get back to you re the bahco rasp. Have not managed to use the rasp as much as I would like to posting my opinion on it, but definitely agree with you that it is on the course side, particularly compared to the Auriou cabinetmakers rasp Paul has, that I have had a brief go at. That 4 in hand sounds like a good way to go.
17 November 2013 at 4:42 pm #21637Does anybody know how the Narex rasps compare with the Bahco rasps can you get finer cut Narex ones
27 November 2013 at 7:50 pm #22490To make my cane I bought a 10″ Narex half round rasp at the Harrogate show for £14 and a Bahco 8″ half round Cabinet from Screwfix for £11.99 they are both very course as far as I can see neither Bahco or Narex make finer rasps.
I found that that as long as I was careful I could use either to shape the walking stick and then obtain a fine finish using a half round file I got awhile back in a set of rasps and files from Aldi I think for about £7
I am still thinking of maybe buying a Auriou rasp but they are expensiveAttachments:

http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Continental_Hand_Stitched_Rasps.html28 November 2013 at 5:27 am #22509I have had a Nicholson 4-in-hand rasp for some time, and it is very coarse. I recently purchased the Grobet Swiss 4-in-1 rasp and did a comparison. They cost about the same, and the Nicholson is just a bit bigger. The Grobet still cuts coarse, but not quite so much as the Nicholson. It definitely was easier to handle and cut a bit smoother.
28 November 2013 at 8:32 pm #22554I did have a look at them Ken but was not sure how the grade compared to the Auriou rasps Auriou are graded from 1 to 15 I think Paul said the one he had was a 10 The finest workshop heaven I think was a 6 which may be no finer than the Narex or Bahco rasps I have, the WH rasps are also shorter than the Auriou rasps.
I am waiting for someone to do a head to head on all rasps28 November 2013 at 8:59 pm #22559David do not confuse WH files with grain size of Auriou, they work to a different system like up to 48 teeth per centimetre thats a lot of teeth I presume in a centimetre square.
Like you say WH rasps only 200 mm long about 8″ I have been pondering over a set of WH rasps but the length put me off a bit.29 November 2013 at 7:45 pm #22659Thanks Mark Ideally you would want the opportunity of trying all the various makes and grades out to enable the correct selection.
At the European wood working show it was possible to try out all the various Auriou rasps, but I did not get too involved because at the time I thought there was no way i would spend £90 on a rough file.9 December 2013 at 5:19 pm #23378I have placed an order on line this morning for a 1/2 Round 300mm No8 grain rasp from Liogier in France.( Christmas present off my daughter)
They do not have any distributers in the UK but I have found dealing direct no problem. I initially sent them an e-mail asking which grain they would recommend for fast stock removal but able to give a decent finish and I got an e-mail back from Noel Liogier recommending the 8 grain for a 300mm and a 9 grain for a 250mm.
Noel has warned me that it is unlikely we will get it in time for Christmas as all of their rasps are made to order.
I think the quality will be similar to the Auriou rasps but slightly cheaper -
