I just found this thread on a UK woodworking forum and thought I’d share. It does a nice job of trying to collate a bunch of information about the Record 52 1/2 including patent dates, manufacturing changes etc.

Kinda sounds like the lettering is a time stamp. Earlier vises were not lettered and the newer bbersions were model numbered.
It would seem that if you’ve got the rounded boss (as both mine have) then its pre 1963 ish as it’s around then that they changed the 52 1/2 to have the new front jaw and flat boss.
Stupid question time: My next project is a proper workbench. Plan to use Paul’s version ( it simply works). Embarrassed to say I purchased a Record 52 1/2 with quick release and dog 20 years ago. Stuck it in a corner and just got busy w/life.
I’ve spent a lot of time watching Paul and have made a few items. I may have missed his comments as to the vise he uses.
Will this vise work well with his bench (this is the stupid question)?
Imagine so, but the last thing I want to do is build a bench and find out “uh oh” is my last words when I get ready to mount this beast.
Thanks to all.
I bought a 52A last week off eBay for £45 and an extra £10 for him to deliver it not bad as Goole to Leeds is a 70/80 mile round trip. Yesterday I bought a vintage Stanley no.4 for 18 quid + 2.90 delivery and from the same seller I got a vintage Stanley 102 block plane plus an unknown extra black plane thrown in for a mere £10.62 + 2.90 delivery. Finally this afternoon I managed to buy a set of the original Aldi chisels 3 brand new only one used very slightly for £6.50 + 3.20 delivery. I’m feeling rather chuffed. I have almost fettled my workshop now ready to join masterclass this week my first build is my bench I honestly can’t wait to get cracking.
Cheers all
Glenn
