Welcome! / Forums / Project Series / Plywood Workbench / Reinserting wedges after assembly?
I’m in the process of building the plywood workbench. In video episode 5 where Paul is fitting the aprons to the legs, he uses a hammer to drive the wedges in to ensure the aprons and legs are held together tightly. He then glues the top to the front apron and glues on the stop to the rear apron. Near the end of episode 6, Paul removes the wedges to trim the length so they’re not sticking out below the aprons.
After trimming, how does he get the wedges reinserted tightly? There’s no room to hit them with a hammer from above. Or do they not need to be driven in as tightly once the bench is assembled?

After trimming them to length, I was able to get the wedges firmly seated by dropping them into the slots in the apron. Then using a pry bar with a block of wood as a fulcrum, I was able to drive the wedges down into the slots until the bottoms were even with the apron. I had to plane a slight bit off of one side of one wedge because it wouldn’t drop low enough into its slot to get the pry bar in between the top of the wedge and the bench top.
.
I’m close to finishing the vise mounting. Once that’s done, I’ll write up some comments and “lessons learned” for the forum.
