Not long now, I didn’t intend to have racing stripes but it was the only thing I could think of doing to rescue the tote from my poor workmanship 🙂
15 November 2014 at 2:04 pm #120993Here are a couple of photo’s of the tote I have made an attempt at making. I’m not sure it will be good enough to use because as you can see there is a shake or split opening up on one side, it looks like the branch I used hadn’t dried out properly. Another lesson learnt!
I have to say though that I found drilling the hole quite straightforward, it just went downhill from there 🙂Photo0080 by Jim-S, on Flickr

23 December 2014 at 12:22 pm #122546Just a bit of thread resurrection 🙂
I bought my old no.4 with a cracked handle and made a new one from the Lee Valley drawing. I also turned a new knob in my drill press. I believe this is santos mahogany, very oily wood, but it smells really nice.

And a few coats of dark shellac later.

11 January 2015 at 7:23 pm #123393Thanks David! It’s a fun and simple little “project”. I’m going to make new handles for a couple of my other planes now, just to personalise them a little.
17 April 2018 at 6:03 pm #527891I also use 5/4 stock when I make a handle (see photo) — this one was just old decking lumber – pressure treated yellow pine. I like the way it turned out. — I have a theory about why the totes always fracture in the same place: we are pushing to hard – or pushing into a knot and coming to a grinding halt. I try to orient the material so as not have that straight grain at the push point. Maybe not as pretty as ÂĽsawn rosewood, but maybe it will last.

The older ones easier to clean up. Later ones have a strange finish, almost an enamel (?) that make refinishing difficult. The UK had tons of these for sale and postage wasn’t bad at all.
