Stephen,
Believe it or not I’ve got the same plans. Hope to keep the wife and daughter busy at the Big Mall across the highway. While I have fun at the show. It will be the first I’ve attended.

I started a new post if anyone is going to Atlanta and wants to meet up.
4 April 2013 at 7:10 pm #10488Update
Thanks for all the welcomed advice on my Router Plane situation. I was able to see the Lie-Nielsen at Highland Woodworking and handle it a bit, and I was able to use Paul’s Veritas at the Atlanta show while working on the workbench. Both seemed like very good tools. However, I did find a decent Stanley 71 on eBay and picked it up. I recieved it and it was missing the screw that holds the “V” blade in the bottom of the post. I had a screw that fit, so other than that it was in perfect condition, never been used before. I ordered an extra “V” blade from Veritas and it fit perfect as well.
Over the weekend I made a board for my Diamond Stones like the one Paul uses. I cut a knife wall on the perimeter of the recesses and used the Router to clean it out. It took a bit of practice, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I am very pleased with what I got in the Stanley 71, although, I do wish it had a better depth stop, similar to the Lie-Nielsen or the Veritas.
After handling all three of the planes, I don’t think you would go wrong with any of them. I believe it will come down to the options. The blade design, and availablility, and the depth stop.
4 April 2013 at 10:49 pm #10494I would love to have LN or V”s alas well out of my price range.
I played with my Stanley cordless router today first time for years, and it was really good.
I also got a little baby Stanley thumb router.
5 April 2013 at 11:40 am #10515The only thing I do not like about my Stanley router it has plastic handles. I bought it back in the 80’s when all the handles went plastic.
I know I have one wooden handle off an old bench plane that I dropped on site was not happy that day as broke plane right across mouth. Also have a real cheap no name jack plane may nick that one as well if they fit router.
5 April 2013 at 5:09 pm #10525Mark, I am not certain of the production year of this plane, but the wooden handles are very comfortable. I may strip the black paint off and refinish them so they will look a bit nicer. I can find no evidence that the plane had ever been used before.

Good buy it looks great , you will find it is a fine plane that you would not want to be without. It is surprising how good a condition they are in they must have been well made with very good plating. I also suppose that they would only be brought out of the box for the occasional job
6 April 2013 at 2:17 am #10535Hi all
I have a vintage record 071 “cordless router”. After sharpening the blades I’m very happy with it so far, although not done more than a few dados yet.
Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get a PDF of the booklet for it? It’d be good to know the best way to use and set it up from “the horses mouth” so to speak.
cheers,
Bill
6 April 2013 at 2:33 pm #10538Hey Bill,
I am attaching images of the “manual” that came with my router. Not a lot of instruction with it, but it does cover the basics. Also, I purchased a book “Plane Basics” by Sam Allen, it has a lot of information about using vintage planes, and includes a section on the Stanley 71. I found it very helpful. The book can be found used on Amazon at a fairly cheap price.

thanks very much for that.
I really appreciate you taking the time to get the images online. Looks like the Stanley 71 and the record 071 are very similar.
cheers,
Bill
I got the same plane as Steve just before Christmas. There is always a lot of them on Ebay of various quality. It’s in pretty good condition but perhaps not as good as yours. I’ve really enjoyed using it, and knowing it’s so old gives me a little pride while I’m using it. But after seeing the Lea Nelsons and Veritas models I’m jealous of their depth stops.

7 April 2013 at 7:27 am #10561Brand newbie here. I just picked up a mint #71 for $28 at an antique shop yesterday, the only problem is it on had 1 cutter, the 1/4″. It is also missing the depth gauge. Where can I get the other two cutters, and the depth gauge?
7 April 2013 at 1:27 pm #10582Welcome Kevin!
The new Veritas blades are the same design and are a perfect fit for the #71. Other than that, folks on eBay sell parts for these routers all the time. Hope that helps, and good luck!
