Did a primary coat of sanding sealer on a mahogany box after normal cleanup, and was surprised next day to find it has gone patchy and was milky/chalky in parts. looked like a bad case of mould! Don’t know what I have done that I don’t normally do so cannot understand what has happen. Had to sand it all down again and re-apply. Has my sanding sealer gone off/reached it sell by date or what? It is not that old as I use it regularly but never seen this before.
I’m assuming the sanding sealer is shellac. If not then the following is of no use.
I’ve seen this when shellac is applied when the humidity is high. Dampen a rag with denatured alcohol and wipe over the affected areas. This should dissolve the shellac and allow it to dry clear.
If the cause was not high humidity/moister then I am at a loss. No matter the cause the denatured alcohol can be used to remove the shellac.
Hi,
I have had the same thing when using the liberon Shellac sanding sealer..
To be honest I didn’t look too far into the causes and went straight back to cutting my own shellac flakes..
I would be keen to work out why it happened also.. I don’t think there was high humidity in my workshop when this applied. I did indeed go back over the patches with Alcohol. That did work.
Hope you work it out.
