I’m restoring a saw. Looks old, with knob and split nuts, it’s marked Peugeot, blade is 40 cm long, 8.5 TPI. What I don’t understand very good are teeth. They look like chisels for rip cut saw, but rake is 45 degree, not 90. Why rake is 45? With 45 rake it will cut in both directions?

    Pictures.

It’s not fair to ask about the condition of a saw otherwise.

Not sure exactly what you mean there; could you take a photo or two and upload those and I can give you an idea of what’s happening.

Sorry, I had a small vacation, here are photos.

Question was if there is a purpose to have it like this? It was common before to make saws with 45 degree rake?

I was thinking to resharpen it to a rip saw keeping tpi.

I’d like to say that it looks like it has been sharpened previously as a cross-cut – this could explain the the angle (a bit). I’m afraid it just looks like it has been badly sharpened in the past and has not become any better with use. You could go with either a rip or cross-cut; the teeth are so bad it won’t matter one way or the other – beautiful looking saw though 🙂

That looks like a nice dull little general purpose crosscut saw which wouldn’t take that much work to make into a sharp little general purpose crosscut saw!! To turn it into a good rip saw would probably take much more work reshaping the teeth into a more aggressive pattern.

Peugeot Freres has a good reputation as a sawmaker. Congrats on finding that one!
    Cheers

Thank you for your comments, I’ll think if I’ll change it to a rip or keep it as a crosscut saw. I’ve already recut teeth, it’s not so difficult for me.
