Great work, Greg. Looks fantastic!

28 March 2016 at 7:40 pm #136044Great stuff Greg – I’m definitely going to make one.
One question though – what is the purpose of the dutchman joint?
Is it just decorative, or does it serve some reinforcing purpose? Thanks for the plans!
All the best,

28 March 2016 at 10:14 pm #136045I also bought the veritas saws and thought them to be a little aggressive. Makes them hard to start without a kerf. Ron Herman told me to take a file or dmt plate and run from handle to tip along the side the saw plate to soften or refine the set a little. I have not had a chance yet. Do you think they need refilling to lessen the aggressive cut? I put another swaw vise drawing in for anyone that would like it.
29 March 2016 at 12:23 am #136048Thanks Chris. The dutchman is mostly decorative but does serve to spread the load across the entire board. I’m not sure it was absolutely necessary, but was easy enough to do.
Michael…I didn’t refile, simply sharpened it with progressive pitch.

16 April 2016 at 10:31 pm #136443Greg,
Did you use a spring-pin (aka roll pin) on the hinge?
I am struggling to find one that is 4″ long at that diameter (I can only find pins that long at bigger diameter).Or did you just use a solid pin? I have some 4″ nails that are about the right diameter and was considering using one of those and cutting off the flat head!
My saw vice is nearly finished. Really looking forward to using it!
thanks again for the plans.

16 April 2016 at 10:39 pm #136445I used a pin out of a standard door hinge. Like would be used on a bedroom door. Purchased a new hinge from the hardware store for ~$4US and pulled the pin out.

Great work on the plan and on the execution of the saw vice. Nice work.

Hey Guys, I made Greg’s saw vice about two years ago and it works great.
Thanks, Greg! It’s not difficult to build for someone in Woodworking Masterclasses. It is very close to one that Paul showed on his blog a few years back. If you don’t have a saw vise make one of these, your friends will be impressed! –Jim

22 April 2016 at 10:39 pm #136614Just finished my build of your saw vice. Just need to stain and finish it with shellac. It took me a bit longer to build than anticipated, but it will be very useful my work shop. I particularly enjoyed shaping the jaws – it really finishes the design well! I attach a couple of pictures. Turns again Greg!
