I recently inherited three planes from my grandfather. He bought them in the UK before the war (between ’25 and ’32), and brought them to the US in ’48. He was a Cabinet Maker in the UK and the US. They haven’t been used since he passed in the late 1970’s.
When I took them apart to clean, all three (a 4 1/2, 5C, and 6) had sawdust packed under the frog! And I mean packed in — it looked like it was done on purpose.
Has anyone heard of this before? Any idea why one would have done this?
Thanks!
I’ve seen this too. I’d always assumed the shavings had worked their way in there over time, but now i’m wondering if it was intentional?
That said, it was common to only snug the frog screws up rather than fully tighten them, so the frog adjuster could be more easily and quickly adjusted?
Cheers
Darren.
