Just lately I have been getting a bit more sawing practice in. One thing is for sure, I can only saw straight on the right side of the line. I mark out a run of dovetails, saw, and chop them out, then cut them off and that is my crosscutting practice also.

Everyone I saw on the left of the line is fatter at the back, on the right they are bang on. No amount of practice is helping, so today I marked them out on both sides of the board, and flipped it around for the second cut, that did it all cuts were right on the line. It takes 30 seconds to mark the other side of the board, I can happily live with that, being right handed, and left eye dominant is not helping, but very happy with todays practice. 😉

Having the same eye and hand dominance and a miserable record of sawing, I am going to give this a try. Thanks Ken

Probably more to do with being able to put your thumb or finger right on the line.
The only problem sawing from other side is break out on face side.
After my last attempts at Dovetails I need the practice as well. Don’t know where I’ll find time though.
Just done another long day !5 hours on a bank holiday Monday I must be mad.

    Hi Mark,
I must have got lucky, no break out on the face side on any of my test pieces.

Ron Herman in his DVD said people that are right handed and left eye dominant, or vicer versa, would find it much more difficult to saw straight and square, and that they would need to practice and train them selves much more.

I will still practice sawing to the other side of the line though, I hate to be beat. 😉

Take it easy buddy, I worked like that for years, but you hit the wall sooner or later, burn out is no good my friend.

Eye dominance is a serious consideration, I believe. Mick from g]here in North Wales found out he was left eye dominant and switched eyes for his sight-line and found things changed much for the better. We experimented in the class last week with an eye surgeon in class and that gave us more insight too.

One thing I find helps me saw straight is to not look at the place where the saw is cutting but slightly further down the cut line. It’s similar to riding a bike and not looking at the wheel but at the road ahead.

Yep I remember setting up the old Theodolite. Had to adjust for Parallax not like the new laser stuff beep.
In the end it is practise getting a feel and training yourself. After a while you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.
I can wink with left eye open but struggle to wink right eye open. lol

Thanks ken I’ve had easier day today still up early and quite physical though. I do rest up when get a chance but just feel I should be having a go at my projects. I got to find balance.

Have you tried Japanese saw to see if it makes a difference?
