The scoop looks good Greg. I will be knocking out one very soon as well. I will post it up when I do.
5 May 2014 at 12:09 am #56758Thanks John. I’ve been tying to talk my teenage son and nephew into doing a project in the shop with me and I’m hoping that this project will finally do it. So I left mine a bit rugged and will make sure that their scoops turn out more refined than mine. Nothing makes a teenager happier than outdoing an adult. 😉
I’ve also spent some time yesterday working on a scope for my wife.
This is my first attempt and made from pallet wood.
It’s a big bigger than the one that Paul made but it’ll work.
Still need to do some final sanding and pondering about how I’d finish it. My wife would use if for flour. Any suggestions?

Bert, I like the handle on your scoop. You can finished it with any food-grade oil. The one I use the most for utensils is mineral oil.
5 May 2014 at 3:23 pm #56775Nice work Bert. I finished mine with by burnishing in bees wax with the polissoir and a piece of rounded hard wood for the hard to reach bits.
John its hard to compete with Xbox and smart phones. They are good kids and I don’t want to force the issue. I just keep throwing project ideas at them and hope one flips the switch. I’m sure once they are in the shop they will get the wood working bug. So I just keep trying.
5 May 2014 at 4:03 pm #56777Nice work Bert and Greg. Longing to finish my workbench to create and inspire as you have done.
5 May 2014 at 6:47 pm #56779Nice Scoops Greg and Bert, a nice intreating project I would recommend for other members to have a go, I made a couple today that still require a finish applying.
5 May 2014 at 7:33 pm #56781Re the finish on food handling items. I’ve baulked at spending good money on food safe mineral oil which will sit on the self for years. I managed to get some grape seed oil (not RAPE seed oil) from Tesco at a reasonable price, and used that very successfully on my spoons and spreaders. Any left over just goes into use in the kitchen and doesn’t hang around to go rancid. Grape seed oil seems very low odour and very clear, no colour, so that suited me. Olive oil is often suggested, but it does have a noticeable odour and goes rancid very quickly.
5 May 2014 at 11:53 pm #56788I’m addicted to the thing! The resulting finish is burnished, so it’s a little harder, and glass smooth. With the addition of bees wax water beads up and runs off. You really should try it. If for no other reason than to feel how smooth a surface it creates.
7 May 2014 at 5:32 pm #56882Jay, I was going to buy one from Don Williams too but after emailing him for 4-5 months with no reply, I found an old broom and just made one (with Greg’s help). It’s easy.
Cheers
7 May 2014 at 6:51 pm #56885Greg what can it me made out of I do not think we have the same type of brooms you have in the states here in the UK ( If we have I have not seen one)
