I’m consistently having problems when shooting end grain on my shooting board. I’m blowing out one side or the other. I am taking a small shaving, so I don’t think the problem is too deep a cut. The plane in use on my shooting board is a LN 4 1/2 with a high angle frog. Any suggestions as to what I can do to avoid chip out when shooting end grain?
Denise, the fence of the shooting board should hang out and support that side of the wood. If your getting chip out on the side facing you the mouth opening on your plane may be catching it as draw the plane back. It could also just be from the sole of the plane dragging.
So, make sure your fence is extended to support the far end. Also try oil on the sole to prevent drag. You can check the mouth for any sharp edges. You can ease the edges with a file or some sandpaper.
Hope that helps you.
As said before end grain better suited with low angle plane. Standard pitch should also do the job. On my shooting board I use either my Recrod 05 or my low angle Stanley 62 Jack plane.
Also do knife wall around should stop blow out.
Denise I go with Jay if you put a small chamfer on back edge it will not blow out.
