I’ve been making a box which is pretty much finished (still got to hinges) and now i’m working on the linings. When finished the lining will protrude about 3/8” above to edge of the box to make a bit of a seal.
I’m not really sure whether the linings should be fixed in place or left loose. At the moment they are a very snug fit and I’m sure if I pushed them all the way to the bottom of the box I wouldn’t be able to get them out (see attached picture) but is it best to glue them? I was thinking of maybe gluing along the top edge just to make there is no gap between the lining and the box. I’ve never done these before so any advice appreciated.

You must be logged in to view attached files.I would like to second this question. I seem to remember seeing a box somewhere with a different wood for the liner (is that what it is called?) which was not glued in. But there was no explanation as to why. The directions just called for a friction fit. But glue seems much better to me.
1 July 2018 at 3:07 pm #549012So I have just gone for the friction fit for now on the basis that I can always glue them in the future if that looks like to right thing to do.
The friction fit works but as the linings are thin (3/16” – 1/4”) I’m concerned they might bow or move to make a gap between the box and the linings in the future – but I guess we’ll see.
I’d still be interested to know if there are any box makers out there who might be able to give me the low down on this.
Cheers
Bill

You must be logged in to view attached files.I doubt it will bow, that probably would have happend by now, I’m slightly confused by the linings though, are you putting those blocks of pine to raise up the inner box higher? or do you have another panel which is the floor that you put over the lining blocks of wood so that it is raised with a gap resting on the blocks? The box looks like it’ll be nice once finished, the contrast of sapele and wenge works well and I like the mitred inner box corners.
1 July 2018 at 8:03 pm #549023@btyreman – the pine blocks in the first image were just there while I was fitting the linings to stop me accidentally pushing them all the way down while they were still tight and maybe not being able to get them out. Thise blocks form no part of the finished box.
The picture in my last post shows the finished linings with the lid propped up behind the box.
I just have hinges to do and then a shellac/wax finish.
Cheers
Bill
