Greg,
What’s the cultural history behind Kolrosing or did I miss where you may have answered that question already. Initially I thought you were ‘chip carving’ until you mentioned rubbing in powders then I realized it’s a different technique.
Photos clarify what your doing, thanks for that.

I believe it to be Scandinavian. At least the term is. You could also call it scrimshaw, but that term is usually reserved for the process performed on bone and ivory. I ran on to the process while researching scandinavian knives and sheath making (try an internet search for sami knife sheath). Then again when researching spoon carving. There are special tools out there and I’m sure that there is far more techniques involved in it.
I’m simply sharing a simplified version that I find useful and had to put a name to it.
Hope that helps.
Fantastic David! Glad to see someone giving it a go. I’ll add cocoa powder to my list. I didn’t even think to try that.
Greg,
Thanks for sharing those projects looks really nice and I especially like the spoons. It is amazing how something so simple makes drastic improvements to a project.

Thanks Ken. I originally was going to chip carve this but I had five to do. This way was quicker and shows up better on the clear pine.
