I am thinking os buying a pair of 12mm Kirschen Skewed chisels for cleaning out the bottom of dovetails , the best price I can see is £26.40 from Axminster, has any member got these or any other make? are they worth having or is a standard bevel edge or knife just as good.

David, a lot of people will tell you, that you don’t need them.That is true. You can do the job fine without them, but I like using them. I use the Ashley Iles Cabinetmakers Fishtail Skew 7/16 inch.

I don’t have any of those, but I made my own skewed chisel by grinding a skewed bevel into an old chisel I didn’t really use. This worked perfectly well for me.
I use a 1/8″ LN chisel to clean out the corners. I also use it to clean out inlay grooves and other tiny areas. Works well for me and it’s easy to sharpen.
Another option: I recently made a couple of skews from some old 1/4″ chisels I had in my box. Took about 10 minutes (including grinding and sharpening).
