I have been stalking eBay for a small crosscut (10-14TPI) Disston saw like Paul has . . . so far no dice. Anyone have anything like it, or seen anything like it? I am looking for one to restore.

Found mine at a Flea Market. Most of my tools too…

I don’t think Paul has a small crosscut saw, I’m sure a read somewhere that all his back saws are rip filed.

I recently re-toothed an old 12 tpi rip tenon saw to 12 tpi crosscut and I’m glad I did. It goes through cross grain MUCH better than it did before. I was fortunate to find this saw in the garage of my house when I bought it. Spear and Jackson, not Disston.

I’ve had a lot of frustration with eBay. People selling saws for far too high a price and when the price is decent, someone snatches it up at the last second for more than I’m willing to pay. Really can’t stand e-Bay, but I’m sure it’s good for those who have the patience to play that game.

I will bet that Paul had crosscut tenon saws. He has said that with fine toothed saws (10 tpi and up), you don’t really need a crosscut pattern. A lot of things he says are geared to new woodworkers who are put off by the thought of having to buy so many tools. Paul often tells us that you don’t NEED “this” or “that”. And he’s right – you don’t “need” them, but I’m sure he has these things because they will do the job better.

Case in point – I think it is in his most recent Shaker Stool, episode 5 video where he states you don’t really “need” a curved bottom spokeshave, but then he goes and uses one because it’s the best tool for the job.

I’ve pretty much give up on eBay. I’ll find something that looks good, at a price I’m willing to pay, and then see the $50 dollar shipping charge. I used to haunt farm auctions and got a few things that way, but antique dealers and collectors have caught on, and are willing to pay more than I think reasonable. Mostly I’ve been saving my pennies and buying new.

Thanks all. Perhaps I am not as much thinking crosscut (poor choice of words on my part) as a small 16″ saw or so… I have a large Disston I was (finally) able to find for a decent price, but between the 26″ blade and my tenon saw—that’s my gap. Recommendations?

Try tool dealers. You will pay more but you can be assured of the quality. The Best Things, Jim Bode Tools. There is a tool dealer above Roy Underhill’s shop (the woodwrights school tool store). A 16″ would be more difficult to find. 24″, 22″, 20″ are probably more common. Think I have a 22″ and a 20″, and way too many 26″.

I can also recommend Jim Bode Tools. I’ve bought 3 or 4 tools from him; often for less than I could have bought them for on eBay. That said, I still shop eBay as well. That’s where I finally found my Record 53 vise. It is more time consuming though.

I would love to find one too, and have given up on the eBay scam. Most of the time you’re bidding against one of the sellers many alt bot accounts. Just because the seller didn’t list a reserve, doesn’t mean he/she’s not getting one.

Thomas Flinn sawmakers, Sheffield UK has a wonderful service and will deliver bespoke saws, as well as always offering both crosscut and ripcut alternatives. While perhaps not cheap, their price for a ripcut 20″ panel saw is quite pleasant compared to the £218 one retailer asks for the same type of saw from Lie-Nielsen.

Depending on where you live, try Craigslist tools section. Last month I was lucky enough to buy a collection that included two 100+ year old Disstons as well as a Groves and a Columbia along with a whole pile of planes, brace and bits, bevel gauges, and other tools for an even $100. I’ll grant that that is not the norm, but I do see reasonable priced Disstons come up there once in a while.

Thanks, all. I actually found a nice E.C. Atkins & Co. 18″ 11TPI rip saw in fantastic condition.
